How Much Sleep Does Your Student Need?

As parents, one of the most common struggles we face is the dreaded bedtime. With busy work schedules, extracurriculars, sports, homework, and family, it can be hard to know how much sleep your child really needs to thrive.

The truth is, sleep is one of the most crucial factors in your child’s academic success. A well-rested brain and body are better able to focus, learn and grow in every way.

HOW MUCH SLEEP DOES MY CHILD NEED?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Sleep Foundation recommends the following for each age and stage:

Preschool (ages 3–5): 10–13 hours (including naps)

Elementary (ages 6-12): 9-11 hours

Junior High (ages 13-14): 8-11 hours

That means if your 8-year-old needs to wake up at 7:00 a.m. for school, bedtime should ideally be between 7:00–8:00 p.m.

WHY SLEEP MATTERS FOR STUDENTS

Academic Success: Students who get enough sleep demonstrate improved attention, memory recall, and problem-solving skills in the classroom.

Emotional Health: Students who do not get enough sleep or are even sleep-deprived are more likely to experience irritability and higher levels of stress.

Physical Growth: During sleep, growth hormones are released, making it crucial for healthy development.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH BEDTIME

  1. Consistent Schedule: Aim for the same bedtime every night-even on the weekends.
  2. Screen-Free Time: Turn off all screens at least 30 minutes before bed.
  3. Wind-Down: Reading, prayer, or quiet time can signal to your child that it’s time for rest.
  4. Environment: Keep bedrooms cool, quiet, and dark.

AT RSM CHRISTIAN SCHOOL….

We see firsthand how rested students thrive in the classroom. When children come to school with energy, they’re more engaged in lessons, friendships, and spiritual growth. Bedtime isn’t just about sleep-it’s about setting your child up for success each day.
